What is Walking Football?
Walking football is a leisurely version of the beloved sport, specifically designed to keep individuals active regardless of age or ability. It offers a fantastic opportunity for players to enjoy the game they love while promoting social interaction and community engagement.
This variant of football features tailored rules that eliminate running and physical contact, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment. Additionally, restrictions on overhead kicks and the implementation of indirect free kicks accommodate the diverse needs of our participants, making the game accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Health Benefits
Participating in walking football provides a wealth of health benefits, especially for our older players, including:
- Cardiovascular Health: Reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke while helping to manage blood pressure.
- Metabolic Health: Lowers cholesterol levels and improves blood sugar control, decreasing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
- Physical Fitness: Enhances bone density, postural balance, and resting heart rate, contributing to overall physical well-being.
- Cognitive and Reflexive Benefits: Improves reaction times and cognitive functions.
- Social Well-being: Being part of a team fosters new friendships, builds lasting relationships, and expands social networks, enhancing overall quality of life.
Our Walking Football Team
Founded in the summer of 2015, Cottingham Rangers AFC’s walking football team has grown significantly and now proudly includes over 50 players. Operating under the Charter Standard Community Club affiliation, our team is supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who manage administrative tasks, team management, fixture organization, and oversee the walking football management committee.
Our diverse squad comprises players aged 50 and above, with our oldest member being 80 years old. We welcome all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced footballers, and even have a few talented players aiming to represent their countries.

What is Ability Counts Football?
Ability Counts Football is designed to be inclusive, welcoming players of all abilities and genders who have disabilities that may prevent them from participating in mainstream football. This program embraces the concept of pan-disability, meaning individuals with a wide range of disabilities come together to enjoy the sport. Our players may include those with learning difficulties, autism spectrum conditions, hearing or sight impairments, Down’s syndrome, Tourette syndrome, restricted growth conditions, amputations (with or without prostheses), and other impairments that affect their sporting performance.
The game format is adaptable to suit the needs of our participants, typically featuring teams of 5v5, 7v7, or 9v9 players, ensuring everyone can enjoy the game in a comfortable and supportive environment.
Health Benefits
Participating in Ability Counts Football offers numerous health and social benefits, such as:
- Physical Health: Keeps players active, improving overall fitness and health.
- Mental Well-being: Increases confidence through a supportive network of coaches and teammates.
- Social Connections: Facilitates the formation of new friendships and lasting relationships with like-minded individuals, enhancing social circles and overall quality of life.
